How to be patient?
I wanted to know the ways in which we can increase in patience in our everyday lives, during times of distress, and when faced with trials.
Trials are one of the Sunnas of Allah in this universe. Allah put the believers under trials really to purify them. The more Allah loves a person, the greater the trial as it was reported by the Prophet’s authentic hadith. The trial would also be in accordance to one’s faith. The stronger the faith, the greater the trial would be. The best ones would be those who show patience and perseverance.
The best remedy is resorting to Allah. Reciting the Quran and making dua’a are ways to relieve distress and anxiety.
Allah says in Surat Annaml, verse 62: “Who listens to the (soul) distressed when it calls on Him, and who relieves its suffering, and makes you (mankind) inheritors of the earth? (Can there be another) god besides Allah? Little it is that ye heed!”
It was reported from ‘Abd-Allah ibn Mas’ood that the Prophet peace and blessings of Allah be upon him said: “No person suffers any anxiety or grief, and says:
‘Allahumma innee ‘abduka wa ibn ‘abdika wa ibn amatika, naasiyati bi yadika, maadin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadaa’uka, as’aluka bi kulli ismin huwa laka sammayta bihi nafsaka aw anzaltahu fi kitaabika aw ‘allamtahu ahadan min khalqika aw ista’tharta bihi fi ‘ilm il-ghaybi ‘andak an taj’ala al-Qur’aana rabee’ qalbi wa noor sadri wa jalaa’a huzni wa dhahaaba hammi (O Allah, I am Your slave, son of Your slave, son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every Name belonging to You which You named Yourself with, or revealed in Your Book, or You taught to any of Your creation, or You have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quran the life of my heart and the light of my breast, and a departure for my sorrow and a release for my anxiety)’ Allah would relieve his anxiety and distress.
And it was reported from Anas that the Prophet PBUH used to say, when something upset him:
“Yaa Hayyu yaa Qayyoom, bi Rahmatika astagheeth (O Ever-Living One, O Everlasting One, by Your mercy I seek help).”
May Allah make you adhere to His straight path, Ameen
